General Medicine – Week 1

it’s been alright so far. most of the cases we see are cardio-related, so i’m just a lil sick of that. though it also means that i should be more familiar with this stuff when i head for my cardio rotation.

i guess i’m still trying to get used to hospital life, where basically you are free to do what you want (in terms of attending whatever’s on the timetable, NOT in terms of doing whatever you want to patients. lol) and learning’s pretty much self-directed. jotting down random facts that we were told during ward rounds, scribbling down what’s foreign to us so that we can go read them up later on, revising the basics which we should know by now but have forgotten over the summer break. in essence, nobody really spoon-feeds you anymore and you’ll either have to ask for the answers or go find out on your own, depending on how nice your 5th year/intern/registrar/consultant is. heh.

what we need to know, what is important to learn for the exams, is not that clear anymore, unlike the past 2 years. everyone learns something different every day because we see different patients and come across different diseases. it doesn’t really bother me because as long as we learn something new each day, it means we are adding something into our knowledge base. yet it does bother me because though i believe that we should be learning for the sake of our future career, for our future patients, and not just for the exams, there’s this bit of me who knows that no matter what, we need to still pass our exams in order to get to where we want to.

contradictions.

anyway, on a different note, the boyfriend’s home! =) it was really good to have him back. and he brought me the Jay Chou 2007 World Tour DVD that i wanted, so that was yay as well. the best thing was that he had a surprise for me which i really didn’t expect – a new iPod! i’ve been wanting one for a while cos i kept running out of space on my 4GB iPod mini, but i figured i’ll save that money and just delete the older songs when i have new songs to add in, so i gave up the thought of getting one. really didn’t think he’ll get it for me. that was really sweet of you, thanks yous verys muchs =)

and on another different note, SAM will be setting up a booth at the O-week carnival at the lemon-scented lawns on 19th, 20th and 26th Feb, 11am-4pm. Do feel free to come down and sign up with us! :)
